One of the primary co-benefits offered by urban forests in general is increased tree canopy coverage. Urban tree canopy provides critical socioeconomic benefits to cities and is considered a critical metric of urban greening initiatives. In addition to stormwater mitigation the benefits provided by urban tree canopy include shade, fruit production, increased wildlife habitat, energy conservation and natural beautification. Implementation of urban tree canopies are also associated with a wide range of public health and educational improvements.

Miami Dade County is already engaged in several efforts to increase urban tree canopy including the Million Trees Miami initiative and the GREEN program facilitated by Neat Streets Miami.

The Million Trees Miami initiative in particular has pursued a goal of the county reaching a threshold of 30% tree canopy land coverage since it began in 2011.
